Celebrated Ghanaian actor Mawuli Semevo has passed away at the age of 63. He succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at Ridge Hospital in Accra, following a severe domestic fire accident at his residence in Adenta SSNIT Flats on February 7.
The tragic incident occurred when a fire ignited in his living room while he was asleep in the bedroom. In an attempt to escape, Semevo ran through the flames but collapsed upon reaching outside. Neighbors promptly transported him to Ridge Hospital, where he received treatment for burns covering approximately 44% of his body.Judith Addison of Beyond Burns International, a non-profit organization supporting burn survivors, highlighted the severity of his condition, noting respiratory injuries that impeded his breathing. Despite medical efforts, Semevo’s condition remained critical, and he passed away 13 days after the incident.
Mawuli Semevo was renowned for his versatile performances in Ghanaian theatre and film. His notable works include roles in “Harvest at 17,” “A Stab in the Dark,” “Escape of Love,” “Like Cotton Twines,” and “The Good Old Days: The Love of AA.” In 2024, he portrayed Baba Fakunle in an adaptation of Ola Rotimi’s “The Gods Are Not to Blame” at the National Theatre.
Mawuli Semevo’s legacy in Ghana’s entertainment industry is marked by his dedication to the arts and his influence on both audiences and fellow performers. His passing signifies a significant loss to the creative arts sector, and he will be remembered for his remarkable contributions to Ghanaian theatre and film.
