Residents of Tema Community One are raising alarms over frequent sewer spillages, particularly in the market area, fearing a potential surge in cholera cases. Overflowing gutters filled with human waste have created unbearable odors and health risks, with no long-term solution despite repeated complaints.

Locals emphasize the need for a complete overhaul of the sewer system rather than temporary fixes. “We can’t wait for another outbreak to take action. Preventive measures are essential for public health,” said Isaac Forson, a local teacher. Tomato seller Georgina Teye added, “Spillages severely impact business because customers avoid the market. If it rains, the waste will spread, increasing health hazards, especially for children.”

Shoe dealer Kwabena Mensah criticized the lack of upgrades since Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s era, noting that the growing population of Tema requires modern infrastructure. “When the sewers spill, wearing a face mask is the only way to breathe. With rising cholera cases, authorities must prioritize sanitation to prevent a disaster,” he urged.

Ofori Laryea, Sewer Manager at Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), acknowledged the issue, stating that the Waste Management Department is repairing damaged pipelines and clearing blockages. However, he urged residents to stop dumping solid waste into gutters and sewers, which worsens blockages, especially during the rainy season.

Despite ongoing repairs, sewer lines in the Community One Business Area continue to overflow, forcing vendors to close shops or use face masks and antiseptics to combat the stench. Residents call for swift action to prevent the situation from escalating into a public health crisis.
