Parliament Prepares for 9th Parliament Registration and Inauguration

Parliament will begin the registration of elected MPs for the 9th Parliament on Wednesday, 25th December 2024. This step is crucial for the swearing-in of members and the election of a Speaker on 6th January 2025.

A statement issued on 24th December by Deputy Clerk to Parliament, Camillo Pwamang, revealed that the registration will start online. Members-elect will receive targeted invitations via WhatsApp or email. Physical registration will take place from Thursday, 2nd January 2025, to Monday, 6th January 2025. Members requiring further assistance can contact the registration officers at 055 022 2200 or 050 363 4466.

Pwamang also shared the schedule for the dissolution of the 8th Parliament and the inauguration of the 9th Parliament on 6th January:

  • Election of Speaker: 6th January 2025, 11 p.m.
  • Members to be seated: 9 p.m.
  • Swearing-in of Speaker and Members-elect: 12 a.m. (Midnight)

On 7th January 2025, the swearing-in of the President-elect and Vice President-elect will take place at 10 a.m. at Independence Square, Accra. Members should be seated by 9 a.m., and buses will depart from Parliament at 8 a.m.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will form the majority in the 9th Parliament with 181 seats, compared to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 89 seats and 4 independent MPs.

The results for two seats, Dome Kwabenya and Ablekuma North, are pending following the suspension of the re-collation of results on 21st December by the Electoral Commission.
